Google Earnings Set the Seesaw: Software and Semis Cannot Both Win Yet

A Low-Volume Fade Hides Wider Damage Beneath the Indexes
All four major indexes opened higher on Monday and faded through the session as volume dried up. Within the SPX, 337 stocks fell and only 165 advanced. The indexes looked calm, but the average stock did not. Positive gamma helped pin the market through much of Friday morning. Once the related options settled late in the day, more downside was able to come through.
Tensions in the Middle East kept escalating and oil moved back toward $90, yet the most active money stayed in AI and semiconductors instead of rotating broadly into energy. Geopolitical risk still has not entered the pricing of core positions in a meaningful way. In a thin market, the more immediate question is how long a small group of heavyweights can keep the indexes steady.
Dispersion between stocks is already high. Inside the same sector, one name can fall sharply while another holds flat or even finishes green. The index color alone is becoming a poor guide to portfolio risk. Positioning matters more.
GOOG Earnings Will Set the Balance Between Big Tech and Semis
Money has moved out of semiconductors for three straight weeks. SOXX has weakened for three consecutive weeks, and SMH is under the same pressure. Meanwhile, the lows in MSFT, GOOG, AMZN, and META have been rising while software and megacap tech trade sideways. The market is leaning toward lower capital spending from the largest technology companies.
Lower spending would help cash flow and margins at big tech firms, and software could keep benefiting. Equipment makers and chip suppliers would lose part of their growth case. The conflict is clear: more than 60% of survey respondents do not expect big tech to signal a capital expenditure cut before the end of 2026. Price action and the published consensus are sitting on opposite sides of the seesaw.
That makes GOOG's capital expenditure language more important than the headline revenue or earnings numbers this week. If spending holds or rises, semiconductors sitting near support could rebound quickly while software and megacaps digest a failed expectation. If management clearly signals cuts, SOXX and SMH probably have further to fall, while big tech could keep grinding higher.
This tension may last. Consensus still puts the larger release of AI free cash flow in 2028, with 2026 looking more like the low point and 2027 the start of a recovery. Until the monetization turn is visible, technology buyers will probably have to choose between software and semiconductors rather than owning both with the same confidence.
The GOOG Range Is Clear, So There Is No Need to Guess Before Earnings
GOOG reports after the close on July 22. Options are centered near $350 and imply a move of roughly $21 in either direction. That puts the upper edge around $371 to $372 and the lower edge near $330, with both levels still inside the broader base.
Even a full expected move may not produce a real breakout. Chasing price in either direction two days before the report means paying for uncertainty at its most expensive point. Existing positions can wait for new information. Investors without a position do not need to force a bet out of fear of missing the move.
Concentration also matters. MSFT and GOOG carry much of the same megacap technology exposure. Once the two positions exceed 20% combined, adding more does not improve diversification. It only increases the portfolio's dependence on one capital spending thesis. Canceling an add is a portfolio decision, not a bearish call on GOOG.
TSLA Is About Reward Versus Risk; TXN Lives or Dies at $263
TSLA is not at the center of the current money flow. Its recent action looks more like a quiet pullback. The company also reports after the close on July 22. Options are centered near $370 and imply a move of about $25, setting a lower edge near $345 and an upper edge near $395. For a swing position in the shares, the reward-to-risk becomes easier to define near the lower edge: use a break below $315 as defense and look first toward $433 to $465 on the upside. Options add time decay, so there is little reason to pay up for leverage here.
TXN faces a valuation test. The options market is centered near $285 and prices a move of about $31 either way. The stock benefited from expectations for strong growth in 2026, but forecasts already show growth slowing in 2027. Earnings now have to show whether the current valuation can be supported by the company's five-year average growth rate.
A break above $312 would put the prior high back in play and could repair confidence across semiconductors. A gap below $263 would leave much thinner support, with $238 and even $200 as possible new balance areas. There is no need to front-run the answer. Watch $263 as an early read on semiconductor sentiment.
The ISRG Add Reduces Semiconductor Concentration
ISRG was increased by 3% near an average price of $354 late in the session, taking the blended position cost to roughly $246.30. The chart is not clean, but a high-volume stabilization offered the first actionable signal. Overhead supply remains heavy. If the broader market keeps dragging, the $300 and $289 areas may be tested again.
Another 4% remains in reserve. There is no need to fill the position at once. If price returns to more attractive support, the total position can be reconsidered for an increase to 8%. The add does not assume ISRG has made its final low. It reduces the shared volatility created by large NVDA and TSM positions and gives the portfolio another earnings path.
Position size still has to fit each account's cost basis and risk budget. Copying an entry without copying the position limit and follow-up plan is how a manageable trade becomes an uncontrolled one.
QQQ Has Broken Support; Treat Any Rally Below $721 as a Bounce
QQQ opened lower near $686 on Friday and broke the $693 dividing line, leaving the technical structure damaged. A recovery above $721 on the back of megacap earnings would repair that weakness. Until $721 is reclaimed, any advance should be treated as a bounce.
The next move is about more than a few points in QQQ. The seesaw between megacap tech, software, and semiconductors can keep the index stable while individual positions move very differently. GOOG's capital expenditure guidance is the first gate this week. TXN at $263 is the second.
The practical move is to plan for both outcomes instead of trying to predict the report. Do not chase if tech rises while semiconductors stay weak. Do not rush to switch sides if semiconductors rebound and software pulls back. Keeping some capital available preserves choices after earnings.
